If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area and want to drop off your e-waste for recycling, check out Earthcare Recycling in San Jose. They’re open 24/7 to accept everything from fans to laptop computers to modems to lamps to fax machines to VCRs and tapes. They’ll even take bubble wrap and those pesky foam packing peanuts.
Ideally, everything we no longer want or need would find a new home where it’s used and enjoyed, but the reality is that obsolete technology and broken household items are pretty much worthless. Throwing anything away is always a last resort … and discarding e-waste is illegal in California. Earthcare’s website says they recycle everything, sending nothing to landfills or overseas. (Note: They don’t take large appliances, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and hazardous waste, but they do have resources for those as well.)
So if your garage or home office harbors outdated stuff with plugs, dust it off, thank it for its years of service and take it on a little field trip to San Jose.
What’s in your garage, closet, office or attic that you’d get rid of, if only you could find a place that would accept it?
